Update Basics
Let it update
Why there are always bugs in programs.
Programmers are always under pressure to release their programs quickly. This means that every program has bugs and holes. Every Program.
That is why every modern program regularly updates itself to patch any bugs that are found later. The worst bugs can allow criminals into your computer. So, patching programs is totally necessary.
The Good News
Are you ready for some good news? If you are using a Windows computer, Microsoft Office, Adobe, or other well-known programs, they will automatically update. The Windows operating system won’t even let you choose to not update. That’s a good thing.
Want more good news? You don’t really need to do anything more to stay updated than allow programs to update when they ask.
The only bad news is that you probably have devices on your network that don’t update themselves. These are the internet controlled switches, cameras, voice activated devices, and even your home router itself. Amazon Echo, most smart TVs and other brand name devices as a general rule update themselves. However, a cheap internet web camera from Amazon from an obscure company likely does not update itself. There does not seem to be many criminal intrusions into networks by devices like this as of the writing of this article, but there is always some risk.
One useful update that is really good to do is to update the firmware ( a fancy name for software ) on your home router. It’s important, because it is the gateway to your network and directly faces the entire internet, but it is fairly complicated. I’ve created a separate article just on updating your router’s firmware here..
